Metal Spiral & Turn Curve Conveyor Belts

At Ashworth Bros., Inc., we invented the lotension spiral system, and we continue to lead with our industry-leading all-metal and hybrid metal-backbone/plastic-surface belts designed for spiral and turn-curve conveyor systems. Our metal spiral & turn-curve conveyor belts enable you to minimize footprint, maximize throughput and ensure the strength, durability and sanitary performance required in today’s demanding production environments.

Whether you’re processing food, packaging goods, or designing a space-constrained spiral or turn-curve layout, our solutions deliver tight turn radii, proven wear life and hygienic stainless-steel construction.

Key Benefits

  • Tight turn radii / minimal footprint — We offer belts that can accommodate turn ratios as low as 1.0× belt width (or even 0.8× in special small-radius versions).
  • High strength & long life — For example, the Omni-Pro® family, with over 10 years of field installations, is described as “the strongest, most reliable spiral and turn-curve conveyor belt available on the market today.”
  • Hygienic and cleanable construction — Smooth, burr-free stainless steel surfaces, open-area designs for airflow, drainage and sanitation.
  • Flexible retrofit & hybrid options — All-metal or metal-backbone + plastic-surface hybrid constructions allow you to match product support, release and process demands.
  • Optimized for spiral and turn-curve systems — Specifically engineered for conveyors that turn or spiral rather than only run straight, addressing space-efficient layouts.
  • Proven in demanding applications — Food processing, packaging lines, freezing/cooling towers, ovens, dryers, etc.

Selection Guidance

  • Determine your required turn ratio (e.g., 1.6×, 1.0× or special 0.8×) based on floor space and system layout.
  • Consider material / sanitary conditions: e.g., stainless steel for washdown/food, or metal backbone with plastic surface for product release.
  • Assess load, speed, cycle life — heavy loads or high cycle counts favor heavy-duty belts like Omni-Pro.
  • Ask about retrofit compatibility — Many belts are designed as “easy retrofit to existing systems”.
  • Engage early with our team for layout review to optimize spiral/turn-curve footprint and optimal belt specification.

Typical Applications

Our metal spiral & turn-curve belts perform exceptionally across industries and application types, including but not limited to:

  • Food processing – cooling, freezing, blanching, drying, conveying baked goods, meat, poultry, seafood in spiral towers or turn-curve layouts.
  • Packaging & distribution – curved conveyor systems routing product transfers, orienting trays, cartons or containers through packaging lines.
  • Space-constrained installations – When floor space, height clearance or spiral tower diameter must be minimized, our small-radius turn-curve belts shine.
  • Industrial ovens / dryers / thermal processes – Where metal belt construction tolerates high temperatures better than many plastic alternatives.
  • Sanitary/wash-down environments – Stainless-steel construction allows for easy cleanability, drainage, and open surface for airflow or wash cycles.

FAQs

What is a turn-curve belt and how does it differ from a straight run belt?

A turn-curve belt is engineered to navigate a bend or spiral rather than only travel in a straight line. In spiral or turn-curve conveyor systems, the belt must maintain smooth product orientation and handle lateral forces and tighter radii. Utilizing turn curve belting minimizes product transfers. Our turn-curve belts include features like special link geometry, higher tension ratings, and engineered turn-radius capabilities.

What does “turn ratio” mean?

The turn ratio indicates the minimum radius of curvature a belt can manage, expressed in relation to the belt width (for example, 1.6× belt width means the inside radius is 1.6 times belt width). Smaller ratios mean tighter turns and a smaller system footprint. For example, our Super Small Radius Omni-Grid belts negotiate down to a 0.8× belt width turn ratio.

What materials are used in metal spiral & turn-curve belts?

We use premium stainless steel (304, 316) or hybrid constructions (metal backbone with plastic surface) depending on the application. Stainless steel is preferred for durability, hygiene, corrosion resistance and high-temperature capability.

Are these belts suitable for food contact and wash-down environments?

Yes. Our metal belts are constructed with burr-free finishes, open link designs for drainage and airflow, and are compatible with rigorous sanitation protocols. Consider our Omni-Grid range for optimal hygienic performance.

Can these belts be retrofitted into existing spiral or turn-curve systems?

Absolutely. Many of our belt families are designed for “easy retrofit to existing systems”. For example, Omni-Grid® 360 Weld is described as “an easy retrofit to existing systems.”

How do I select the right belt for my layout?

Start by defining your required belt width, product size/weight, conveyor speed, required turn radius (or spiral diameter), load cycles, environment (temperature, wash down, sanitation), and budget. Then consult our engineers or product-specs to choose the belt family and variant that matches those requirements.

What is the expected life or durability of these belts?

Belt life depends on system design, load, speed and maintenance. For example, our Super Small Radius Omni-Grid® offers belts rated at 100,000 cycles in typical use. Regular maintenance, correct tensioning and alignment will extend life considerably.
